November 17th, 2022 by

The Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Edge are two of the most sought-after SUVs on the market. They’re both well-rounded vehicles that provide excellent value for money, which can make it difficult to choose between them. Taking a closer look at their specifications and features can help you decide which is more suitable for your needs. Let’s find out how the Chevy Equinox stacks up against the Ford Edge in this detailed comparison.

The main difference between the Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Edge is their class. The Equinox is a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) that competes in the compact segment, whereas the Edge is a midsize SUV.

If you’re planning to buy the Chevy CUV, you can choose from four trims: the entry-level LS, the LT, the sporty-looking RS, and the range-topping Premier. Depending on the trim, the base manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) ranges from $25,800 to $31,000. The Ford SUV, on the other hand, is available in five variants: the SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, and ST. It’s much more expensive than the Equinox, with a starting MSRP of $37,945 for the SE and $46,485 for the ST.

Power

The Chevrolet Equinox offers only one engine option: a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, the Equinox delivers lively, powerful acceleration and feels capable of meeting most driving situations. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available as an option.

When it comes to power, the Ford Edge has the upper hand over its Chevy rival. It comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbo-four that produces 250 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In addition, it has an available 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 that serves up 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. This unit works with a seven-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard, whichever engine model you choose.

Fuel Economy

If you want to save money at the gas station, the Chevrolet Equinox is an ideal vehicle for you. It returns 26/31 mpg (city/highway) with front-wheel drive and 25/30 mpg with all-wheel drive, which is impressive for a compact crossover. In contrast, the Edge has a fuel-efficiency rating of 21/28 mpg when equipped with the base engine. Upgrading to the V-6 engine causes the figures to fall to 19/25 mpg.

Interior

On the inside, the Chevrolet Equinox looks and feels more refined than the Ford Edge. It features a solidly built cabin with generous amounts of quality materials and soft-touch surfaces. It does a good job of keeping road and wind noise at bay. The Edge’s cabin doesn’t seem to justify its price tag. Its interior design is outdated, and most of the materials are unimpressive. Higher trims for the Edge offer some nice touches, but the upgrades fail to correspond to the price increase.

The Equinox and Edge have two rows of seating accommodating up to five people. The Chevy Equinox offers adult-friendly legroom in both rows of seats, but its rear seats aren’t as spacious as its rival. The Ford has 40.6 inches of rear legroom, which is the most among all two-row models in the midsize segment.

Cargo Space

Being a compact crossover, the Chevy Equinox has a considerably smaller cargo area compared to the Ford Edge. If you leave the rear seats up, you’ll get 29.9 cubic feet of cargo space. Folding the rear seats down yields 63.9 cubic feet, which is enough for stowing a weekend’s worth of camping gear and even a couple of bikes. The Edge is more spacious, with 39.2 cubic feet of storage space behind the back seats and 73.4 cubic feet behind the front seats.

Infotainment Features

Whether you decide to purchase the Chevrolet Equinox or Ford Edge, you’ll have a wide array of infotainment features to keep you informed and connected on your trips. The Chevy Equinox comes standard with a 7-inch touch-screen display, four USB ports, Bluetooth, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, HD radio, satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system. If you want a better experience, opt for available features, such as an 8-inch touch-screen display, two extra USB ports, a wireless device charger, navigation, and a seven-speaker audio system.

The Edge base model has a 12-inch touch-screen display, four USB ports, a Wi-Fi hotspot, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and a six-speaker sound system. Available upgrades include navigation, a wireless device charger, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Safety Features

Another attractive aspect of the Chevy Equinox and Ford Edge is their extensive lists of driver-assistance technologies. These features help you stay safe on the road by alerting you to potential hazards and providing automated assistance in emergency situations.

With the Equinox, you’ll get standard active safety features such as forward collision detection, pedestrian monitoring, forward automated emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure monitoring, automated high beams, a rearview camera, teen driver monitoring, and rear seat alert. Teen driver monitoring allows you to set speed and audio volume limits for a secondary driver, while rear seat alert helps you avoid leaving your children or pets behind when you exit your vehicle. For enhanced safety, you can equip your Equinox with optional features, such as blind-spot alert, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic detection, a 360-degree parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and hands-free parking assistance.

Not to be outdone, the Edge comes standard with blind-spot detection, forward collision alert, forward automated emergency braking, pedestrian alert, rear cross-traffic monitoring, lane departure detection, lane keep assist, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. In addition, it offers upgrades such as lane centering assist, evasive steering assist, adaptive headlamps, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a front-view camera, and automated parking assistance.
